  10.     This is a problem that seems to crop up quite often, and
  11. I seem to not know the answer.  I've just installed X on my
  12. Linux box and I've *almost* got it working.  I'm using
  13. X386mono and 'startx' brings me into X windows and I've got
  14. a cursor which moves with my mouse and I can get the twm
  15. menu to come up with a mouse click.  Everything fine to this
  16. point.

  18.     However, whenever I try to start an X application (i.e.
  19. xterm), my machine chugs away for a second or two but then
  20. nothing happens.  The process seems to just die.  When I
  21. exit, I don't have any error messages on the VC.

  23.     I've done 'mkfontdir /usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi' and
  24. 'mkfontdir /usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/misc', but I still am
  25. without working X clients.  My guess is improper permissions
  26. somewhere (X386mono and xterm are both suid root).
