  15. i'm trying to get my printer to work with the lpr command.  here's what's
  16. ahppening.

  18. (btw, the printer works if i type directly to /dev/lp1 or to /dev/printer,
  19. which is a link to /dev/lp1.)

  21. first, i have lpr and lpd in my path, and lpd in my /etc/rc file.
  22. my /etc/printcap looks like this:

  24.     :lp=/dev/printer:
  25. my /etc/hosts.equiv file includes just the word 'linux', my not-so-creative
  26. machine name.

  28. when i lpr .bashrc (for example), the files are created in /usr/spool/lp1.
  29. lpd.lock is created in /usr/spool.
  30. the information in /usr/spool/lp1/cfa000...linux appears correct.
  31. the printer doesn't print.

  33. when i run lpc and ask for 'status' it tells me
  34. queueing is enabled
  35. printing is enabled
  36. 1 entry in spool area
  37. no daemon present

  39. why is there 'no daemon present'?

  41. when i give the command 'up lp', it responds 'daemon started'
  42. but 'status' gives the same message.

  44. lprm works properly, as far as i can tell.

  46. the man page for lpr says that ''if a connection to lpd on the local
  47. machine cannot be made, lpr will say that the daemon cannot be started.''
  48. i haven't a clue what this means.

  50. perhpas lpd needs an option or two? perhpas i just overlooked something?
