  19. gzip (GNU zip) is a compression utility designed to be a replacement
  20. for 'compress'. Its main advantages over compress are better
  21. compression and freedom from patented algorithms.  The GNU Project
  22. intends to make this the standard compression program for its system.

  24. gzip currently uses by default the compression algorithm used in zip
  25. 1.9 (the portable pkzip compatible archiver). The gzip format was
  26. however designed to accomodate several compression algorithms.
  27. gunzip can currently decompress files in gzip 'deflate' format, zip
  28. format or 'compress' format. The detection of the input format is
  29. automatic.
