- I posted a msg regarding Linux prototype. So far I received only
- one mail. I created an example of what I want on ftp.ee.umanitoba.ca
- Here is the README from ftp.ee.umanitoba.ca:pub/linux
- What do you think ?

- This directory contains "Linux prototype".
- The purpose here is to show what Linux system may look like.
- So that you can :
- - grab file(s) that are missing on your machine without
- downloading the whole package.
- - download the binaries without recompiling the file yourself
- - see what files are supposed to be in certain directories.
- This is usefull for installing big packages, like gcc, uucp,
- etc.
- For example I have a bunch of files in /lib directory but
- I don't know which one is being used.
-
-
- There are some drawbacks :
- - The binaries may not work with your system (different kernel
- version, etc.). If it doesn't work, the you have to get
- the source code, and compile it yourself.
- - You may have different directory structure, so some stuff may
- have to be recompiled.
- - Some stuff has site dependent information coded in the binaries.
- For example some mailers have your machine name, domain name
- build in the binaries.
- - Don't know how this will affect GNU stuff, since I think we
- suppose to make the source code available. I am not sure
- whether I can put all the source code here, since we have a limitted
- space.
- - I don't know how to give credit to the person who wrote the code,
- port the code, or compile the code. What do you think ?
-
-
- The complete source code of the programs/files available here
- are available from:
-
- tsx-11.mit.edu
- sunsite.unc.edu
- nic.funet.fi
- and various other places.
-
-
- N o t e s :
-
- - Files are in compressed format. You have to uncompress it yourself.
- - I am using Linux 0.99.1, some of the binaries were leftover from
- earlier versions (maybe even from 0.12 !!)
- - Please contact me if you want to upload your binaries.
- - I preffer to have these files somewhere else. The ftp directory
- on this machine is not big enough.
-
- These files are provided as is. No guaratee what so ever.
- Use at own risk.
-
- Have fun.
