- Would it be possible to have a "Linux prototype" accessible
- through telnet/ftp or other means ?
-
- What I mean by that is a site which has all files (executables,
- libraries, rc or configuration files) in the 'proper' place.
-
- For example, this telnet/ftp-able site has
- /bin/...
- /usr
- /usr/bin
- /usr/lib
- /usr/spool/...
- /lib/...
- /etc
- ......
- directory structures with binaries in it.
-
- Advantages :
-
- 1. Users who do not want ( or can't) compile programs can grab
- the binaries. I often have to download source files and compile
- them over and over again (I don't keep the sources, not enough
- space on my drive). Sometimes I just want to update a file,
- (eg: it complains about stat() call and must be recompiled),
- I know where I can get the source etc, but I just want the
- binaries.
-
- 2. Users can see the proper location of certain files.
-
- For example: what should be put in /lib directory
- or what link I should make.
- I have a whole bunch of lib* files in my /lib dir but I don't
- know what does what. I don't want to remove any of these files
- since something might break. :-(
-
- This is also usefull when installing big packages like gcc, uucp,
- news, etc. Users can see the locations of certain files.
- If s/he doesn't have that file (for some reasons), just download
- the file (not the whole package).
-
- Would be nice if this prototype machine is 'telnet-able'.
- (I believe there is a public telnetable 386BSD machine, forgot the
- name. I did a telnet to that machine and was able to look around).
-
