- I'm interested in using Linux to help local small businesses
- get computer resource and function without the expense of some
- of the current operating environments (ie. MS. Windows). The
- businesses I am thinking of would not likely need a GUI (or at
- most one console). The rest of the user's would do just fine
- with terminals. What I am looking for is reliability information
- on Linux. I see a lot of hackers on this conference are happy
- with Linux, I would like to hack with it too. However if I were
- to have to support this for a business I would like to know I
- could rely on the system. Here are some questions to which I am
- interested in getting some answers.
-
- 1. How long does your system stay running at any given boot?
-
- 2. How reliable is the file system. Do files/filesystems get lost
- often (how often).
-
- 3. How well does the system stand up to large numbers of processes
- running? How does it respond in low resource conditions?
-
- 4. I have used other Unix systems with X Windows and found that 4MB's
- is woefully inadequate. What is needed to run Linux with X?
- What is needed to run several (10 or so) terminal sessions?
-
- 5. I am interested in writing a character cell windowing system so that
- terminal users can still get some of the multi-window advantages
- without the X Window overhead. Is anyone else working on such
- a system? I was thinking about Alpha Windows as a basis for this
- software.
-
- Sorry if some of this information is found in the FAQ, but I have been
- unable to get the FAQ off tsx...
