- X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.1 PL6]
-
- Hopefully, this should be very beginner friendly. If it is not,
- please feel free to correct me (for the whoppers) or contact me
- by email (for the beginners).
-
- As I mentioned earlier, Robert Chalmers sent me his ez-install
- disk for wnews/tin/elm so that I could upload it to Raven. I
- have just done so. In short, this is a binary distribution of
- the aforementioned software packages. This should be EVERYTHING
- a beginner needs to get Usenet going on his/her (though I haven't
- seen any "her's" roaming around here) Coherent 4.0 (no, it won't
- work on Coherent 3.2) system as well as a really good mail program.
- The programs are:
-
- wnews - Netnews processing subsystem. This package will take incoming
- and outgoing batches of news and "deal with them." You NEED
- this if you intend to send/receive usenet news. It is fairly
- small and, after Udo Munk's extensive cleanup, quite fast and
- reliable.
-
- tin - Threaded newsreader. It has always worked well for me. This
- program takes the "processed news batches" which wnews spits
- out and puts the articles into some semblance of order for
- you. It is quite user friendly.
-
- elm - This is probably the most full-featured email user agent
- around. It is very forgiving for beginners and also allows
- more advanced users to do lots of "neat things." It is
- extremely user friendly.
-
- In order to use the package, you will first need to get freeze, which
- I have also sent. Freeze is the GNU project's version of compress.
- It does a significantly better job of shrinking files. I typically
- get archives that are 20-30% smaller than compress can produce.
- I'm not sure how behaved it is under low memory conditions, as I have
- lots. :-) I am tempted to think that it will be a little more of a
- memory hog than compress as it uses 18-bit compression rather than
- 16-bit.
-
- When you get freeze, link it to melt and fcat and it will work
- just like compress. You can do the links like so:
-
- ln freeze /usr/bin/melt
- ln freeze /usr/bin/fcat
-
- Of course, you don't have to put them in /usr/bin, but make sure you
- put freeze and its links somewhere that your path statement knows
- about so you can find them. Instead of a .Z being appended to the
- file, you will find a .F.
-
- After you have freeze setup (should take you all of 10 seconds),
- you can "melt" the "eznews.tar.F" archive. You type:
-
- melt eznews.tar (you don't need to add the .F)
-
- Then type:
-
- tar xvf eznews.tar
-
- This will "untar" the files. Now just follow the INSTRUCTIONS which
- were written by Robert. If there are any problems with this package,
- kindly let me know.
-
- Cheers,
-
- Chris
