-
- Now this may be a red herring since supposedly this problem only shows up under
- DOS due to fast A20-gate switching, but I thought I would bring it up anyways:
-
- What is at the end of the BIG BIOS serial number when the machine boots? For
- the latest keyboard BIOS (for AMI) there should be the letters 'KF' or at least
- an 'F'. With earlier revisions of this BIOS, I have heard that there are
- problems with the keyboard in protected mode due to the A20 gate. Earlier
- versions include 'KA', 'K8' and 'KD'.
-
- Does your machine have a 'Fast A20 gate' option in CMOS setup? In the article
- that discusses the A20-gate problem it says that setting this option should
- always be done; it may make the problems go away.
-
- For anyone interested, the article is "Exorcising the A20 poltergeist" by Mark
- J. Minasi in the "Beyond DOS" column of the August 1992 issue of Bytes (pages
- 293-4).
-
- I wonder if the 'cheap keyboard problem' is an entirely different and
- unconnected phenomena?

-
- My keyboard came as part of the package deal of my old 286 which I have since
- upgraded to a 386. This keyboard works fine with virtual consoles. It is a
- "Lite-On" keyboard; do you consider that a brand name keyboard?
