- Here's the situation:
-
- I'm setting up WinQVT/Net on a local network here, so that Windows (R)
- users can get email connectivity to our SMTP feed. WinQVT/Net uses
- the POP3 protocol to retrieve mail from a POP server; that half of
- the connection works just fine.
-
- Unfortunately, since some older versions of the POP server didn't
- support the transmission of mail originating _from_ the POP client,
- the developers of WinQVT/Net have decided to transmit mail from the
- client via SMTP, rather than use the Berkeley extension to the POP
- protocol (which not all servers would provide).
-
- This sounds fine, at first, but generates undeliverable return
- addresses when mail is sent out from a Windows (R) box, ie
-
- From: vlcek@windowsbox.epimbe.com
-
- where windowsbox is the PC's hostname. WinQVT/Net does not accept
- incoming SMTP connections, so mail sent back to this address (via a
- "Reply" command or button, which is how about 95% of users send mail!)
- will not be deliverable. Since the obvious remedy (don't use "reply")
- would require a change in behavior on the part of all those who send
- _us_ mail (namely, customers), it is an unworkable solution.
-
- Is there anything I can do to get mail targeted for certain hostnames
- to be delivered instead to the POP server (into /usr/spool/mail) ?
- All mail goes through one central point (epimbe.com) via a uucp link,
- so whatever setup that needs to be done can be done in one place.
-
- Please send email to vlcek@epimbe.com and I'll summarize and post to
- the net.
-
- PS - Other than this minor difficulty, WinQVT/Net is a wonderful
- shareware program. It's really useful in a mixed Unix/Windows
- environment like ours.
