- All,
-
- Please accept my sincere apologies for the mail server screw-up that caused my
- system to keep posting the same message over and over, with expanding
- headers... It was caused by a new script I'm using. I haven't figured out how
- to fix it yet, but I'm not going to send any messages to any lists from the
- server until I figure it out.
-
- Since this is a multimedia mail list, I'll explain briefly... I'm using
- QuickMail, which looks for a line starting with "Attn:" and delivers the
- message to any user who has the name that follows it. It also pre-pends
- messages with a similar "Attn:" line. So the server was finding the "Attn:" in
- the incoming message from the list, then sending it back out to the list. This
- caught be by surprise because I had only entered the list address on my system,
- not in the server. But now I know that the server compiles a database of all
- addresses used by the workstations.
-
- It's really kind of stupid, since it assures that these sort of circular things
- can happen. And the worst part is that I wouldn't even know about it because
- I'd never see the messages. Luckily, I subscribe to the list under a different
- address than the one that I use to send messages, so I did receive several
- messages from people on the list who were annoyed by the repeating messages.
-
- I think I'm going to modify the outgoing mail script to drop the "Attn:"
- line...
-
- Embarrassed,
