  12. Let me give you the scenario first and then my questions.  (NOTE:
  13. the platform is restricted to either a PC or IBM RS/6000.)
  14.  
  15.     I would like to scan a user manual for one of our company's
  16.     products.  Then I would like to OCR it and put it in some 
  17.     desktop publishing/word processor format (the manual contains
  18.     text and graphics so desktop publishing may be best).  
  19.     Moreover, once it is OCR'd, I'd like to turn it into a 
  20.     multi/hyper media format so that users can get quick access to 
  21.     the info they need.  I would really like to add audio/video
  22.     sequences to make certain parts easier to understand.

  24. Okay, now for my questions:

  26.     1.  Can you recommend any good scanners and scanning programs.
  27.         NOTE:  I would also like to scan slides and transparencies
  28.         (I have seen a flatbed scanner with a special attachment
  29.         which allows scanning slides, but would like recommendations
  30.         anyway.)

  32.     2.  Can you recommend any good OCR programs.  It should be able
  33.         to handle multiple fonts, multiple columns, segregrating
  34.         text from graphics, multiple word processing/desktop publ.
  35.         formats, etc.
  36.  
  37.     3.  Is there any way to take the document just created via 
  38.         OCR and automatically turn it into a multi/hyper media
  39.         application?  For instance, could an ASCII file be run 
  40.         through a program which will turn it into a Toolbook
  41.         application (or any other multi/hyper media format)?

  43. I'd appreciate any comments to these or other issues relating to this 
  44. sort of project which I haven't raised.
