-
- I am happy to announce the availability of version 2.4 of the metamail
- software for turning text-oriented mail readers and other programs into
- MIME-conformant software.
-
- This latest release includes many enhancements and bug fixes, most of
- them contributed by the metamail user community on the Internet. It
- also includes a vastly expanded "contrib" directory, full of all sorts
- of MIME-related goodies such as software for mail based services, for
- using metamail in a client-server paradigm, sh versions of the csh
- scripts in the main distribution, specialized software for DOS, Amiga,
- and Macintosh machines, and much more.
-
- The distribution is available for anonymous ftp on thumper.bellcore.com,
- in the directory pub/nsb, as compressed tar files. For the first time,
- the distribution has been separated into several separate tar files:
-
- mm.2.4.tar.Z -- the metamail distribution that NSB supports.
-
- contrib2.4.tar.Z -- contributed sources
-
- amiga2.4.tar -- Amiga binaries & utilities
-
- dos2.4.tar.Z -- DOS binaries (still one version downlevel, may be
- upgraded soon)
-
- Also, for those who have an ATOMICMAIL license, the sources are in a
- separate tar file. Contact me for more information.
-
- A complete list of changes in the main tar file can be found in the same
- directory on thumper in the file "2.4.CHANGES". The new stuff in the
- contrib directory is NOT documented in this file -- you're on your own
- for that. Contributors to the "contrib" directory are encouraged to
- verify that their contributions are intact in that directory, and then
- to post separate messages explaining their contributions as they see fit.
-
- An important note: If you pick up the new software, you should also at
- least check out the new prototype mailcap file and consider upgrading
- your mailcap file accordingly. The new one has a "compose" entry for
- external references, and it has an entry to use the "kterm" program for
- Japanese text mail.
-
- Future plans: If there are major bugs, I will try to put out a patch
- file in the next few weeks, but otherwise I do not expect another
- metamail release for several months. The core software is really pretty
- stable these days, with the primary growth being in the contributed
- software, which is now nearly three times the size of the core.) As
- always, I'll be around to answer questions on the info-metamail mailing
- list or (preferably) the comp.mail.mime newsgroup. For now, though, I
- think I'm going to bed. Thanks again to the many people who have
- contributed time, advice, encouragement, and kind words to the metamail
- project. Keep those cards & letters coming! -- Nathaniel
- ----------------
- What follows should allow Internet-connected users of older versions of
- metamail or other MIME-conformant software to retrieve the 2.4.CHANGES
- file and the tar files.
