  13. Having considered Steve Knight's responses to my criticisms of
  14. the Pepper proposals for changing the quotation conventions in
  15. Pop-11 I now accept that those proposals are workable and probably
  16. preferable to the current Pop-11 conventions, given the use of "\"
  17. as a reserved text item to get over the difficulties I described.

  19. I have not thought through the implications of using "\" in this
  20. role, nor whether this is consistent with its use as the standard
  21. `alphabeticiser' as in "don\'t" which should create a word
  22. containing an apostrophe.

  24. Of course all the proposed changes will prove so painful to the
  25. existing Pop-11 users that many of them will want to go on using the
  26. old version (just as many refuse to switch to using lexical
  27. variables: they like the non-lexical defaults: witness the new
  28. book by Chris Thorton and Ben du Boulay "Artificial Intelligence
  29. Through Search" which uses Pop-11 and Prolog throughout, and so
  30. far I've not found a single "lvars" in it!).

  32. So the "pop" community will inevitably be further fragmented once an
  33. implementation of Pepper becomes available.

  35. A new "standard" won't have the same effect as with C, where
  36. everyone (or almost everyone) agreed to a new version because people
  37. trying to produce portable software in C were already suffering from
  38. the incompatibilities between differen versions produced by
  39. different vendors. There's no such pressure for a new standard for
  40. Pop.

  42. Perhaps pressure will be created by producing an implementation
  43. of Pepper that runs on very popular machines where Poplog Pop-11 is
  44. not available, i.e. PCs running MSDOS and Macs !!!!
