- de Boer is about the only one making sense here. Everyone else is
- stuck in an old paradigm: enter info one line at a time and hit return.
- You're all saying, "we grew up with 'return' makes the program
- continue to the next input". So, it has to stay that way, right?
-
- Boys and girls, the paradigm has changed. Your thinking has to change
- along with the times. It's no easier, it's no more logical, it's not
- ordained by any higher power -- whatelse have I forgotten -- it's not
- even consistent to hit the "return" instead of the "tab/shift-tab" key.
- And it's no more intuitive (we could go round and round on what's
- intuitive.)
-
- Spreadsheet columns and rows -- what does hitting "return" get you? Is
- that logical? If p then q, p is true then ...? The latter is logic,
- assignment of functionality to keys has little to do with logic,
- and all to do with convention. Next time you feel like burping
- at your mother's holiday dinner because your stomach is erupting,
- are you going to do what's logical or what's conventional?
-
- Dialog boxes -- what would you propose for going in reverse "return" order?
- Shift return? Explain that to your grandmother who uses your computer more
- than you do and more wisely!
-
- And to top off discussions of logic, we have the following ...
-
- > I just *HATE* when TAB moves to next field and ENTER accepts the stuff
- ^^^^^^
- > by mistake when you really wanted next field!!!!
-
- Live and learn. Be flexible, and above all, to paraphrase my
- father: "think before throwing the return key into gear!"
-
- > I will *NEVER* follow such a stupid standard if I can avoid it!
-
- Don't expect to have happy end users as a result of avoiding
- the standards. But many of you are clever enough to show us our
- sins, we the standard followers (just sheep, nothing more).

-
- You know, it just doesn't make any sense spending ourselves silly
- at this time of year. Why do we do it? And why do I hum these
- stupid songs, like "Dashing through the snow,..." when it rarely
- snows? In a sleigh?
