  76.         Information privacy is increasingly recognized as a
  77. critical issue with very difficult problems and divergent
  78. viewpoints.  This presentation will include an update on the
  79. status of the EC Privacy Directive and will provide an important
  80. foundation for the card technology presentations and work
  81. group meetings that follow.

  87.         This presentation and discussion will consider the
  88. growing (and unresolved) legal-technical issues in card
  89. technologies.  Forget about "signatures" - - "smart cards" and
  90. optical cards are geared to become commonplace (and often
  91. mandatory) as authenticators and record keepers, respectively,
  92. for diverse business and government purposes.  For example,
  93. patient health records are being placed on "portable data
  94. carriers" (optical cards), Denmark will launch the first nation-
  95. wide smart card for users to make phone calls, pay for public
  96. transportation, laundries, vending machines and parking
  97. meters; smart cards are anticipated to be mandatory for
  98. S.W.I.F.T. usage from the first quarter of 1994; universities are
  99. issuing smart cards as student IDs; corporate ID cards are
  100. moving towards smart cards; material data safety information
  101. is capable of transfer via cards; bank cards in France use
  102. microchips rather than magnetic stripes; and health insurance
  103. and HMOs have ambitious plans to introduce smart and optical
  104. card technologies.

  134. approaches to the development of workable rules for
  135. authentication and the accomodation of signature attributes
  136. within an electronic commerce environment.  This session will
  137. consider and seek to integrate the pertinent formalistic and
  138. evidentiary issues.  Special consideration will be given to the
  139. requirements of global data networks and open systems and
  140. open trading environments.  Additionally, attention will be
  141. given to security requirements within Financial EDI
  142. applications.
