  12. Readership information is posted monthly by the Network Measure Project at
  13. Digital Equipment Corporation's Western Research Labs. I include parts of the
  14. most recent report below. I have also included the estimated readership info for
  15. the month of Aug. 92 (last time I looked previously), since that was higher.
  16. This is very unusual, since network volume and almost all other usage parameters
  17. are more than doubling each year.

  19. I checked with Brian Reid and he said this change is due to the new way he is
  20. estimating parameters. So, the best guess about number of readers is now about
  21. 28,000. (There is a bimonthly increase of about 3%.) I don't think the figures
  22. he gives takes into account non-Netnews readers. We know from previous
  23. discussions both in this group and in news.admin that some large commercial
  24. services download Usenet groups. Sometimes these readers cannot post to the
  25. group. Also, there are many people who access news via WAIS and other archive
  26. oriented software. So the cumulative readership over time will be much higher
  27. then the estimates below.

  29. Once something is archived on the net, readership seems to increase
  30. indefinitely. I am now in contact with someone at IBM who read an article I
  31. posted to VIRUS-L two years after it was archived. I doubt this contact would
  32. have occurred if the article had been published on paper. The full text
  33. searchability of Netnews articles makes finding relevant material much easier
  34. and more reliable.
