If your SUN workstation belongs to your university or your company, You may ask your aministrator whather he/she has installed a 'picture viewer' in the system. Otherwise, you need to have a viewer program in order to view the GIF file.
For example, my university has installed xv viewer (one of the nice viewer programs which can view GIF and JPEG files.)
IF you can't get a viewer on SUN SPARC, then probably you need to ftp to SUN from your PC system. Once you download the GIF files, you still need a viewer for PC system (I know there is a PC viewer called wingif.exe but it couldn't display a clear picture.) You can use other viewers instead of xv or wingif.exe.
Both GIF and JPEG are graphics files, but they have the different file formats. Some viewers can only display either GIF or JPEG but some can display both of them.
