- Adobe Announces SuperATM Revolutionary Font Substitution Software
-
- Preserves text format in documents by creating metrically exact
- substitutes for Adobes Type 1 or TrueType fonts
-
- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 9, 1992) Adobe Systems Incorporated
- today announced SuperATM, a new addition to the Adobe Type Manager
- (ATM) product line that eliminates text format changes when
- displaying and printing documents that contain fonts not available on
- the users computer.
-
- Within any Macintosh or Windows environment application that
- supports SuperATM software, a metrically exact substitute font is
- automatically created for any Adobe Type Library font (and a
- selection of TrueType fonts) found in a document. This substitution
- process accurately preserves the documents original line and page
- breaks, regardless of where the document was created or what fonts
- were used.
-
- We want to help make computers communicate more effectively, the way
- people want to use them, and SuperATM represents important progress
- toward that goal, said John Warnock, chairman and CEO of Adobe
- Systems. Now it is possible to use electronicdocuments anywhere,
- without worrying about the fonts. For people who work on different
- computers at the office or at home, or for those who need to read or
- edit documents created elsewhere, SuperATM eliminates the frustration
- of seeing the documents text format altered because of a missing
- font.
-
- The document may also be edited using the substituted fonts, and the
- edited version will display and print the original fonts when opened
- on a system that contains them. The substituted versions are
- metrically identical to the original outlines, but will lack some of
- the fine detail of the original design.Graphics professionals and
- other quality-conscious customers can allow documents to be edited
- using substituted fonts, knowing that the original fonts will print
- when present on the output system, Warnock added. Most business
- users will find the substitute fonts perfectly acceptable, but will
- want the original typefaces for the actual publications.
-
-
- Product Description
- SuperATM software is based on two key Adobe technologies: an enhanced
- version of Adobe Type Manager font-rasterizing software, and Adobes
- multiple master type technology announced in 1991. All substituted
- fonts, serif or sans serif, are derived from two new multiple master
- designs developed especially for this product.
-
- SuperATM software also includes typeface software for five unique
- symbol and display typefaces that do not convert well in font
- substitution: Symbol, ITC Zapf Dingbats, Bellevue, Cottonwood and
- Madrone.
-
- Currently, SuperATM software performs automatic font substitution with
- any of these leading Macintosh applications: Microsoft Word 4.0 and
- 5.0, Microsoft Excel 3.0 and 4.0, Aldus PageMaker 4.2, QuarkXpress
- 3.1, Aldus Freehand 3.1, MacDraw Pro 1.5, Adobe TypeAlign 1.0.5,
- FileMaker Pro 1.0, ReadySetGo! 4.5a and 5.0, ClarisWorks 1.0, Claris
- Resolve 1.0, MacProject II 2.5v1, MacProject Pro, Nisus 3.06,
- Publish-It 2.1, Publish-It Easy! 1.0, MathType 2.11 and QUED/M 2.09.
- Other leading Macintosh and Windows applications are expected to
- support SuperATM in the near future.
-
- SuperATM adds significant value to every application that supports
- it, making those applications more flexible and reducing font
- compatibility headaches for users anywhere they choose to work, said
- Warnock.
-
- If the users Macintosh application does not support automatic font
- substitution, the benefits of SuperATM are still available. The user
- simply installs the bitmaps of the needed typefaces and font
- substitution occurs. To ensure that all the bitmaps are available for
- this process, Adobe is including its Type On Call CD-ROM with the
- SuperATM program. The CD-ROM contains an unlocked bitmap for more than
- 1,300 Adobe Type Library fonts.
-
- In addition, the SuperATM package includes Adobe Type Reunion
- software for menu management of both original and substitute fonts. A
- click-to-install program is also included to simplify installation of
- the various elements of the package.
-
- Price and Availability
- The Macintosh version of the SuperATM package is expected to be
- available from Adobe Authorized Resellers by the end of 1992, at the
- suggested retail price of $149. A special $49 upgrade will be
- available directly from Adobe to currently registered owners of ATM
- software. For information, customers should call 1-800-83-FONTS.
-
- A Microsoft Windows environment version of the SuperATM program is
- expected to be available mid-1993.
-
- System Requirements
- Using the Macintosh version of the SuperATM program requires a
- Macintosh computer with 2 megabytes (if running Apple System 6
- software) or 4 megabytes (if running Apple System 7 software) RAM;
- hard disk drive and one diskette drive; and any PostScript or
- non-PostScript printer compatible with ATM software. Requirements for
- IBM PC and compatible systems will be announced at a later date.
-
- Adobe Systems Incorporated, founded in 1982, is headquartered in
