  15. 12/26, trying to call (713) 370 from (713) 337 (roughly, far far south
  16. Houston to far northwest Houston, GTE to SWB).

  18. I don't know if it's long distance so I first try 7D.  SID tones (at
  19. what feels like 110db), "The number you requested cannot be completed
  20. as dialed, please consult ..." message.  I'm sure I dialed the number
  21. correctly so try it again (this time holding phone far from ear) --
  22. same screech followed by same message.

  24. Call operator -- verify the call is LD and GTE is just issuing the
  25. wrong message.

  27. As I'm at a friends house, I decide to put the call on calling card.
  28. 102880+10D.  <boing> GTE.  Huh ...?  I know this is intralata but I
  29. told them to use AT&T.  They can't override my choice of carrier can
  30. they?  Try it again except as 102880 + 7D (713 has gone 1/0 + 10D on
  31. all LD calls but who knows what GTE is doing).  <boing> GTE.

  33. Call the operator to see whats going on -- it should work, you must be
  34. misdialing, etc.

  36. Finally, in disgust, 1028800.  <boing> AT&T.  Placed the call and
  37. nobody answered :-(

  39. Just for the record, SWB and GTE are staging major lobbying efforts
  40. for the upcoming session of the Texas Legislature.  The desired goal
  41. is the effective deregulation of telcos in Texas.
