  19. Personal Communications Applications

  21. Bellcore is currently understaking the investigation of new network
  22. access services to meet the communications needs of people on the
  23. move.  The goals are to identify networking requirements and access
  24. network interfaces to achieve complete location and access
  25. transparency for applications using all media and to understand the
  26. impact on exchange and exchange access networks.  This research takes
  27. the broad view of providing network access to personal, secure,
  28. location-independent, multimedia communications through both wireline
  29. and wireless facilities using a wide range of customer terminals,
  30. including pocket phones, notebook computers and portable workstations.
  31. The areas of research include:

  33. Systems and software architectures and access network interfaces for
  34. personalization and portability of services,
  35.  
  36. The access network requirements generated by applications for new user
  37. interfaces and portable terminasl, including stylus-based notebook and
  38. palmtop computers,
  39.  
  40. Interfaces and requirements for access to network-based data,
  41. signaling, and connection and resource management associated with
  42. personal, multimedia applications which include image, data, voice and
  43.  
  44. Opportunities for local exchange networks to enable portable, secure,
  45. wireless transaction-oriented data services to support emerging
  46. non-voice applications such as messaging, point-of-sale transactions,
  47. database queries and file transfers.

  49. Bellcore is seeking industry participation in these investigations
  50. through the establishment of research collaborations to trial
  51. prototypes of new access network elements and interfaces used in
  52. conjunction with emerging wireless networks and end user technologies
  53. and their applications.
  54.  
  55. If your company is a potential manufacturer of products in the
  56. personal communications applications area, a potential information
  57. service provider, a potential wireless service provider or a private
  58. or public laboratory with a research program in telecommunications and
  59. wishes to participate in these activities, we invite you to submit a
  60. brief, non-proprietary description of your proposed product or service
  61. and the potential applications.  Members of the industry who are
  62. interested in participating should respond by January 15, 1993.
