  21. My brother-in-law has recently gone into the business of selling
  22. COCOTs!  (That's what brothers-in-law are for, don't you know.)  While
  23. I want my wife's brother to make money, I cringe every time he tells
  24. me how much business he's doing, since each sale represents one more
  25. place from which I can't make a phone call. :-) I told him so, of
  26. course.

  28. Torre tells me that he can now, in California, obtain a "Coin Line"
  29. from Pacific Bell.  This line has the following features, detailed
  30. discussion of which leads me to believe that Torre is telling the
  31. truth, and even understands it :-)

  33. * Pacific Bell operator collect and return.
  34. * Pacific Bell/AT&T coin calling with standard Pacific Bell call
  35. costing.
  36. * Subscription to the operator service of your choice (Torre's phones
  37. typically are subscribed to AT&T or MCI.  Having been burned himself, he
  38. does not sell sleazy AOS service.)
  39. * No computer in the phone.  
  40. * No need to cut off the keypad.
  41. * Uses standard Western Electric coin phone.
  42. * This one is amazing:  Pacific Bell 611 (repair) service with
  43. Email/Fax dispatch of the coin phone provider's serviceperson.

  45. Torre states that he uses these lines for high traffic phones, and
  46. uses more traditional COPT lines (not POTS lines) for lower traffic
  47. areas.  The coin lines are about $250.00 to put in and about
  48. $55/month, although they carry free local calling (owner keeps the
  49. 20c)
