-
- Both modems are based on the MDK-100 modem design kit from Digicom and
- the Digicom V.32bis chipset, which is based on the Analog Devices 2101
- DSP family. So they have many features in common. The factory register
- defaults are quite a bit different, though, since the intention was to
- make the Eagle easily compatible with the Prodigy service.
-
- The Eagle is only available to Prodigy members and is made available
- for a limited time in connection with Prodigy's recent introduction of
- 9600 bps service (for a flat rate of $16.95/month). From what I can
- tell, Prodigy was clever to decide on the Eagle since its a good match
- with their longer term strategy.
-
- The Scout+ is and remains Digicom's flagship modem and thus you can
- expect it to be around for a long time, with innovations like
- voice-mail, switching between voice/fax/data, a real Class 2.0 fax
- interface and others planned. The MacIntosh package currently available
- for the Scout+ supports fax/voice switching for example. I am not so
- sure about Caller ID in the near future, since Pac*Bell e.g. has just
- decided not to make this service available. Digicom tends to stick to
- those features which are useful to many users. Since its an engineering
- driven company which owns the DSP source code in their modem chipsets,
- they are quite flexible in this regard.
