- I have an external Zoom v.32bis modem which I've been using for about three
- months with no problems. However, my needs are rather undemanding; 90% of
- the time I use it to connect to the modem pool at school (using a relatively
- clean line within the University phone system). The other 10% of the time,
- I've connected to CompuServe, and a couple of OS/2 BBS's, also with no
- problems. The fax capability has also worked well, though I've only used
- it a few times. As a side effect, I know quite a few students who also
- have Zoom modems (since it's one of the more well-known, readily available,
- low-cost brands) and they helped me a great deal when I first got the modem,
- and had to configure it to work with the tempermental school modems.
-
- IMHO, if you will be calling a relatively small number of sites, try out
- the Zoom first; if it works, then go for it; it's a great modem for the
- price. From what I've heard, I would not recommend using it on a BBS or
- for a purpose which requires lots of dail-in's; that could be a problem.
- But for my limited needs, I've been very satisfied.
