  13. After upgrading my ZyXEL modem to 5.02 ROMs, I learned, that the new 
  14. ROM versions contain a voice mode, that digitizes sounds from the
  15. phoneline.
  16. So I FTPed the latest version of ZFAX (I think its 2.1). While the package
  17. contains quite a lot of docs about the voice-features, ZFAX itself is
  18. a lousy answering machine (cannot set silence sensitivity, no skipping
  19. of messages, no remote changing of outgoing message, etc.).

  21. Dont get me wrong here. While ZFAX probably is quite o.k. for receiving faxes,
  22. the voice features are rather modest, compared to what the ZyXEL COULD DO.

  24. I was thinking about the following features:
  25. - everything a decent telephone answering machine can do
  26. - timestamping of messages
  27. - personal voice-mail
  28. - voice menus (like most companies seem to have these days)
  29. - FastFaxts-like features (select a document and get it faxed to you)
  30. - automatic message forwarding (program the number, where you can be
  31.   reached and let the modem forward messages to that number). Same thing
  32.   could work for faxes !
  33. - send timed voice (bulk-)messages (New Year Greetings etc...)
  34. - Anthing else you can do/operate with a TouchTone phone and a Fax-machine

  36. Hmmm. Ok. Some of these ideas are a bit over the top, but IMHO all of
  37. these things CAN BE implemented with litte software on the PC-side, since
  38. most is already handled within the modem.

  40. Since at least some of these ideas are obvious, I would think, that someone
  41. has already written some PC software in that direction. If so, could
  42. someone please tell me, where to find it, otherwise, I might just start
  43. writting some code.
