- Weeeellll... I have a brand spanking new 14.4FX internal (except that it had
- 1.15m ROM's - sigh) and it is about 85% ok so far. I have no trouble
- connecting to USR's, other PPI 14.4's, or whatever it is the local internet
- machine uses (the latter is only V.32, tho). I can push about 1680 cps on
- downloads and 1620 on uploads with Zmodem, and a similar speed on Ymodem-G
- downloads. However, I still haven't been able to make it do Ymodem-G uploads
- to the HST's, and the internet machine won't accept uploads at ANY speed, even
- 2400 with EC and compression disabled and my local port locked at 2400. I have
- not tried other than originate mode so far, as I don't run a BBS.
-
- The current modem setup is just the AT&F1 defaults. To connect to old 2400's,
- I use AT&Q6; for others, the default AT&Q5 works well. So far, only one system
- supposedly capable of V.32bis has posed a problem - the other modem recognizes
- my error correction but insists on connecting at 2400 bps.
-
- Any help would be MUCH appreciated. The defaults entail local CTS/RTS (the
- port is locked at 57600, its maximum), XON/XOFF provided by the comm
- software (Qmodem 4.52TD), V.42, V.42bis, MNP5 if applicable. The modem
- on the internet machine is connected to a port locked at 38400, and it
- presumably uses XON/XOFF (since that is what I use during sessions other than
- downloading). I am using locally compiled rz/sz, rb/sb, and rx/sx on the
- internet machine connected to my local implementations in Qmodem.
-
- I haven't used the modem enough to make a recommendation for shoppers, but
- the first one I got was defective (so said tech support). The box looked
- like it might have gotten smushed in transit, though. The second one connected
- right out of the box after I set AT&F1 as per the manual. This local line is
- fairly noisy, so I find the connect abilities rather impressive. Tech
- support was prompt and polite, and they tried about everything I could think
- of short of shuffling the cards in the machine (the modem card is a bit wide;
- I had to rearrange my cards to get it in). They are usually around until
- 12:30 AM my time, so I can't complain. I just wish it were an 800 number :-).
- I like the built-in 16550 UART especially, since I am a heavy Desqview user.
- I haven't had occasion to use the FAX, but the software looks like a standard,
- cryptic <g> package for anyone not acquainted with modems in general.
