- Since this is "Spyder"'s second post ragging on PPI, I should note that,
- as PPI's tech folk say, the modem does work just fine for "other people."
- I have had my PM14400FXSA since early June, at a point when most people
- thought it was still vaporware. I have not had a single problem with it
- that wasn't fixed by a ROM upgrade early this fall.
-
- I routinely call a variety of other modems, with no difficulties:
- 1) PPI 14.4 - obviously, this works fine.
- 2) Intel 14.4 - this also works fine.
- 3) Telebit T3000 - this also works fine.
- 4) MultiTech 9600 - this also works fine.
- 5) USR HST 14.4 - this also works fine (at 9600)
- 6) Zoom 14.4 - runs at 12.0, the Zoom's got a glitch.
-
- As "Spyder" is apparently running a UUCP site, I _presume_ he's got more
- understanding of telecommunications than the average man on the street.
- Since I've been using the PM14400FXSA longer than anyone else I know, I'd
- be interested in finding out the specs on his unit (how early the serial #
- is, what ROM revision he's running) and also what brands other people are
- attempting to use. As I noted above, my unit works fine with anything that
- I've encountered.
-
- I'd also suggest taking a more in-depth look at the connections which are
- failing. Are they being placed across a digitial telephony switch? Do the
- modems on the other end support v.42/v.42bis? How's the line quality? Do
- the DTE's on each end match? Are the connections through an X.25 network or
- a terminal server to ethernet?
-
- It's very easy to blame everything on the modem, as "Spyder" has chosen to
- do, and I'm not ruling out the idea that it's a bad unit. However, from my
- own experience with the brand, and the fact that the company is apparently
- a subset of _Hayes_, I suspect there might be a little more awry than that.
