- You can query the modem for the firmware version with the ATI0
- command (i0 in lower case).

-
- The 1496E uses 1MBit EPROMs for firmware 5.0 or above (512kBit for
- versions below). 5.04 does only (to my knowledge) fix one minor
- problem when connecting to HST modems.
-
- I have, BTW, used 16.8 already under OS/2 and it works fine (I have a
- 16550). I use C-Kermit 5A for all communications.

-
- Forget all DOS fax software. I use PMFax (now called Faxworks/2?) very
- successfully with the ZyXEL 1496E+. The PMFax readme file even
- mentiones it as being tested (and one needs to put a special command
- for it in one of the config boxes for receiving faxes).

-
- Bitfax works with class 1 (sierra send/recv) modems, while the ZyXEL
- is a class 2 fax modem.
-

-
- Don't know of any that works with the ZyXEL, PMFax is a commercial
- one. If you want to write one yourself, the ZyXEL modem has a
- proprietary FAX mode which is very easy to program, see the chapter
- 13, page 2, "Extended Fax AT Commands".
