- CCITT Recommendation V.32bis allows 2 methods of changing the
- data signalling rate: retrain (equivalent to the handshaking you
- hear after the 2.1 kHz answer tone), which is an alternative to
- dropping the line and calling again when the modems have
- difficulty talking to each other, and renegotiation without
- retraining, which is a faster method of changing the data
- signalling rate between the modems.
-
- The train or retrain sequence enables the modems to gain an idea
- of the line quality and hence what data signalling rate to
- attempt, whereas renegotiation without retraining uses the
- information already gained from the existing connection about the
- data signalling rate the line is capable of (from getting many
- bit errors or very few to no bit errors) to request that the data
- signalling rate be descreased or increased as the case may be
- between 4800 bps and 14400 bps.
