- Hi everybody,
- I don't as a rule expect every piece of hard- or software to work at the third
- or fourth attempt, and I'm ready to spend any reasonable effort to make it
- work; but my fax modem beats me.
- I own a brand new Digicom Scout Plus modem which works all right with kermit
- and uucp, connecting to various modems at a wide range of speeds: no problem.
- I just can't get it to fax - precisely: not even to connect to the office
- fax machine. (The office fax machine is a standard standard standard G3 fax
- which daily sends and receives faxes to and from every conceivable location
- so I take it that side is all right).
- What happens when I let my modem dial the office fax: the two beep at each
- others in a surprisingly rich collection of tunes, but after the third
- attempt or so they find they don't really have anything in common so both
- of them disconnect; my modem returns a laconic NO CARRIER.
- My modem has some 40 or so parameters I can change and I've been through
- most of the 40! combinations: the result is always the same.
-
- Q: At what speed are fax modems expected to connect? Do they use V.32 data
- rate negotiation, or something different?
- Q: At connection time, do fax modems negotiate error correction (MNP, V.42)?
- Or something different? Or none at all?
- Q: Could somebody who has a fax modem working let me know what parameters
- (speed, error correction, compression, Trellis coding etc.) are in effect
- at connecting time?
- I'd really appreciate any help on this - I haven't got stuck like this for
- years.
- I should add that I DID RTFM: the modem manual is as good as any and better
- than most - on everything else. On fax there is NOT A SINGLE LINE.
- Help please.
