- From a Macintosh, you can certainly use DAL (Data Access Language), which
- MS Excel has well integrated into the database functions of the
- spreadsheet. The DAL extensions can be defined to work over IP,
- Asynchronous, or AppleTalk network protocol. I'm not sure if all this is
- supported for Windows. You have to purchase a DAL server for Sybase, for
- your Unix box, but the DAL extensions on the Mac side are free from Apple
- and Microsoft. You can build some very cool
- interfaces using Excel; for example I've got a spreadsheet which queries
- the database every three minutes to give me a list of users, and in another
- window, charts the cpu, io and user totals in a nice 3-D graph. You can add
- hightlighting to that which can show blocking users, cpu hogs, etc.
