  24. For *you* there may be no need. If you are one of those "happy" DOS
  25. users who think DOS is all and everything, you may be right.

  27. So far, PKware has not produced a version of PKZIP for Unix, for
  28. example, although they do now have one in the works. Also, their
  29. support for other platforms like OS/2, Mac, Amiga etc. has been
  30. very marginal.

  32. If there were no people who wrote new ZIP programs for other machines
  33. or ported some over, there would not be the simplicity and ease with
  34. which you can move .ZIP archives around the world and across a wide
  35. variety of machines.

  37. Look what happened to ARJ: you can only use it on DOS. And there is an
  38. increasing number of people who use more than one machine/OS. How are
  39. they going to use ARJ? They can't.

  41. Similar for LHa, although there is now a Unix version, *years* after
  42. LHarc for DOS appeared. And the "official" LHa is still a DOS program
  43. only.

  45. And, don't forget, if there were no people who wrote *new*
  46. compressors, we would still be stuck with ARC or compress only and
  47. their inferior compression rate.
