- For *you* there may be no need. If you are one of those "happy" DOS
- users who think DOS is all and everything, you may be right.
-
- So far, PKware has not produced a version of PKZIP for Unix, for
- example, although they do now have one in the works. Also, their
- support for other platforms like OS/2, Mac, Amiga etc. has been
- very marginal.
-
- If there were no people who wrote new ZIP programs for other machines
- or ported some over, there would not be the simplicity and ease with
- which you can move .ZIP archives around the world and across a wide
- variety of machines.
-
- Look what happened to ARJ: you can only use it on DOS. And there is an
- increasing number of people who use more than one machine/OS. How are
- they going to use ARJ? They can't.
-
- Similar for LHa, although there is now a Unix version, *years* after
- LHarc for DOS appeared. And the "official" LHa is still a DOS program
- only.
-
- And, don't forget, if there were no people who wrote *new*
- compressors, we would still be stuck with ARC or compress only and
- their inferior compression rate.
