  77. l.  JOB SUMMARY

  79. The Professor will provide leadership in the areas of software engineering
  80. education, research and industrial liaison.
  81.  
  82. The Department of Computer Science is a multi campus department with an
  83. enrolment of approximately 650 equivalent full time students in its courses
  84. and a staff establishment of approximately 55.
  85.  
  86. The following courses are offered by the Department:
  87.  
  88.     .  Bachelor of  Applied Science (Computer Science).
  89.     .  Bachelor of Applied Science Honours (Computer Science).
  90.     .  Graduate Diploma  in Computing Studies.
  91.     .  Graduate Diploma in Knowledge Based Systems.
  92.     .  Post Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering.
  93.     .  Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Applied Science in 
  94.        Information Systems.
  95.     .  Master of Applied Science (by Coursework) in Information Technology.
  96.     .  Master of Applied Science and PhD (by Research).

  99. In addition to the above programs, the Department has a heavy involvement
  100. in research and development principally in the areas of database systems,
  101. computer graphics, artificial intelligence and software engineering.
  102. Collaborative links exist between the Department and other related
  103. Engineering and Science departments both at RMIT and Melbourne University.

  105. The teaching programs of the Department cover a wide range of computing
  106. areas including programming languages and methodology, computer
  107. architecture, systems analysis and design, theory of computation, database
  108. systems, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, software engineering,
  109. formal methods, data communications and networks, operating systems,
  110. systems programming and compiler design.

  112. The Department operates two multi-processor Encore Multimax computer
  113. systems (to be replaced in 1993), a Sun 4 mini-computer and a VAX ll/750
  114. all running UNIX.  A wide range of computer laboratories and networked
  115. workstations are available for teaching and research.  Students also make
  116. use of the University's Computer Centre mainframes and super-computer
  117. facilities.

  121. 2.  QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  123. The applicant should have: 
  124.  
  125. .   A higher degree (preferably a PhD) in Computer Science, 
  126.     Software Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline; 
  127.  
  128. .   A distinguished international reputation either in the field of
  129.     software engineering theory or software engineering practice;
  130.  
  131. .   A record of excellence in both the teaching of software engineering and
  132.     its industrial practice;
  133.  
  134. .   An established history of publication, particularly in one or more of
  135.     the following areas:
  136.  
  137.     -  formal description techniques,
  138.     -  validation and verification,
  139.     -  real-time systems development, 
  140.     -  object-oriented technology,
  141.     -  programming language design & implementation.

  145. 3.  DUTIES
  146.  
  147. The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Department and
  148. will:
  149.  
  150. 3.1    Coordinate and participate in the teaching of software engineering
  151.     courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and carry out
  152.     related academic functions; 
  153.  
  154. 3.2    Supervise projects and theses primarily in the area of software
  155. engineering;
  156.     
  157. 3.3    Build a solid basis of software engineering research in the Department
  158.     and attract funding for that research;
  159.  
  160. 3.4    Establish collaborative links with other academic or research
  161. institutions and industry;
  162.  
  163. 3.5    Perform administrative duties associated with the tasks outlined
  164. above;    
  165.  
  166. 3.6    Perform other appropriate duties as required by Head of Department.

  169. will coordinate activities in the area of software engineering at both the
  170. City and Bundoora campuses.
