  11. I am having some problems interfacing Waffle 1.65 (running here at Valinor
  12. BBS) with the mail software of one of my neighbor sites (using
  13. UUPC/extended 1.11k).  The problem evidences itself in a difference of
  14. interpretation of how certain headers in a mail message may be formatted.

  16. I have examined RFC #822, and the problem seems to be with the
  17. interpretation of how the To: line of the header is constructed.
  18. Apparently, when this neighbor site sends outgoing mail, it formats the
  19. header lines such that the address field and the other structured
  20. field-bodies are nicely aligned.  This alignment is performed by adding
  21. "extra" space characters between the colon and the beginning of the
  22. address field.  (In general, it appears that there are usually eight (8)
  23. space characters between the colon on the To: line and the first character
  24. of the address field.)

  26. If there is more than one SPACE character after the colon on the To: line,
  27. the address field begins with a quoted-string ("Alfred E. Neumann" for
  28. example), RMAIL ignores the SPACE characters that precede the
  29. quoted-string and goes on to process the message without any problems.
  30. However, if there is more than one SPACE character after the colon on the
  31. To: line and the address is a 'bare' address consisting of only the
  32. user@domain information, then RMAIL seems to think that these 'extra'
  33. SPACE characters are an address! The .DAT file that shows up in my
  34. outgoing spool directory now has an 'extra' (but illegal) addressee on the
  35. To: line that only consists of an "@" followed by my site's domain name!!!
  36. For example, if the message comes in from my neighbor with the following:

  40. then, after RMAIL processes the message, the message in my outgoing queue
  41. has the following instead:

  43. To: @valinor.mythical.com, al.neumann@mad.org

  45. Does RFC #822 provide limits (either minimum or maximum) upon the number
  46. of SPACE characters that separate the "To:" from the mailbox on the
  47. destination line?  Must there be at least one SPACE, and is there any
  48. reasonable interpretation to prevent the existance of more than one SPACE?
  49. Is Waffle 1.65 (and RMAIL) misbehaving (as I believe it is)?  Is there a
  50. workaround???  Many, many thanks in advance to all of you helpful Waffle
