- Hi everyone!
-
- I've been keeping a low profile on the net recently as I'm busy hacking
- away on Helldiver and a number of other projects. In light of the recent
- discussions on Helldiver and the Helldiver Packet Format, I thought I'd
- post an update.
-
- First of all, thanks to all those who have been using Helldiver, sending
- comments to me and generally praising me on my efforts. Isn't there
- anyone who despises Helldiver? :-)
-
- On the beta-or-otherwise status of Helldiver: Version 1.07 wasn't intended
- to be a beta, so I'll call it an official release.
-
- For the future, I hope to have version 1.08 released by the end of January,
- which adds a few requested features and fixes a few bugs. After that, I'll
- be re-writing much of Helldiver from scratch to make extensions to other
- UUCP systems (e.g. UUPC and FSUUCP) much easier and incorporating changes
- for handling LANs. I also plan to add support for the Helldiver Packet
- Format, and maybe QWK too if I get time. It's also possible that a DOS
- version of Helldiver will be available too, but since Helldiver is very
- memory-hungry, this may be difficult. I have no idea when this re-write
- will be available, but hopefully within the first few months of 1993.
-
- Due to some suggestions from Bill Fenner and Kevin Houle, the Helldiver
- Packet Format has changed somewhat to make it more extensible. If anyone
- wants a copy of the updated spec, please contact me. I'm putting together
- a door for Waffle to generate the packets and a "quick hack" packet reader
- (Helldiver will be the full-blown and supported packet reader in the future).
- This should be available in the next week or so for beta-testing. Kevin
- is also using the format in his off-line reading project "Solar". So, the
- much-needed support should be forthcoming pretty soon.
-
- Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.
-
- Cheers,
-
- Rhys.
