  13. I've been keeping a low profile on the net recently as I'm busy hacking
  14. away on Helldiver and a number of other projects.  In light of the recent
  15. discussions on Helldiver and the Helldiver Packet Format, I thought I'd
  16. post an update.

  18. First of all, thanks to all those who have been using Helldiver, sending
  19. comments to me and generally praising me on my efforts.  Isn't there
  20. anyone who despises Helldiver? :-)

  22. On the beta-or-otherwise status of Helldiver: Version 1.07 wasn't intended
  23. to be a beta, so I'll call it an official release.
  24.  
  25. For the future, I hope to have version 1.08 released by the end of January,
  26. which adds a few requested features and fixes a few bugs.  After that, I'll
  27. be re-writing much of Helldiver from scratch to make extensions to other
  28. UUCP systems (e.g. UUPC and FSUUCP) much easier and incorporating changes
  29. for handling LANs.  I also plan to add support for the Helldiver Packet
  30. Format, and maybe QWK too if I get time.  It's also possible that a DOS
  31. version of Helldiver will be available too, but since Helldiver is very
  32. memory-hungry, this may be difficult.  I have no idea when this re-write
  33. will be available, but hopefully within the first few months of 1993.

  35. Due to some suggestions from Bill Fenner and Kevin Houle, the Helldiver
  36. Packet Format has changed somewhat to make it more extensible.  If anyone
  37. wants a copy of the updated spec, please contact me.  I'm putting together
  38. a door for Waffle to generate the packets and a "quick hack" packet reader
  39. (Helldiver will be the full-blown and supported packet reader in the future).
  40. This should be available in the next week or so for beta-testing.  Kevin
  41. is also using the format in his off-line reading project "Solar".  So, the
  42. much-needed support should be forthcoming pretty soon.
