  14. Since I've gotten quite a few questions about the Yosemite plates posting,
  15. I thought that I would basically answer as many questions as possible (and
  16. basically type in information contained in the application for the plates).

  64. What is the Yosemite licence plate?

  66. An official licence plate issued by the DMV for vehicles registered in 
  67. California.  The plate is distinguished by a full-frame four-color graphic
  68. design of Yosemite Valley.  This design appears in place of the plain white
  69. or blue background on regular licence plates.  Sale of the plates will
  70. benefit The Yosemite Fund, a charitable foundation.

  72. What is The Yosemite Fund?

  74. The Yosemite Fund, under agreement with the National Park Service, raises
  75. money for the preservation and restoration of Yosemite National Park.  Since
  76. 1986, the Yosemite Fund has provided $2.5 million of financial support and
  77. has completed over 60 projects in the Park.  These projects include the
  78. restoration of the Happy Isles area, the preservation of Stoneman Meadow,
  79. most of the Park's back country trail maintenance and augmentation of its
  80. Peregrine Falcon and Bighorn Sheep populations.

  82. How much does the Yosemite plate cost?

  90. After the DMV deducts its administrative costs, the proceeds will be divided
  91. between The Yosemite Fund and the California Environmental Fund.  It is
  92. estimated that The Yosemite Fund will receive:

  94.     * $13 on each newly issued plate
  95.     * $20 on each renewal

  97. This money can ONLY be used for preservation and restoration in Yosemite
  98. National Park, not for Fund overhead and administrative expenses, not for
  99. park operations.

  101. Can I keep my current licence plate number?
  102. ------------------------------------------
  103. If you already have a personalized plate you can convert it to a Yosemite
  104. plate.  If you have a sequential plate, you will exchange it for a new
  105. random sequence on the on the Yosemite plate.  If you particularly want to
  106. keep your random sequence, you can do so by requesting that sequence as a 
  107. personalized plate. (See below for more information about the different
  108. plate types and specific costs.)

  114. manufactured are expected to be ready by late summer, 1993.

  127.          2. Description of the Yosemite Licence Plates

  130. The plates will be a full-frame, four-color graphic design of Yosemite Valley
  131. as pictured from Tunnel View.  The mountain faces are white with grey shadows
  132. and the shy is pastel blue.  The foreground is the valley floor in forest
  133. green.  The letters for "CALIFORNIA", which is centered at the top of the
  134. plate, are red.  Also in red are the letters for "YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK" which
  135. are centered at the bottom of the plate.

  138. Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, December 16, 1992 or the latest issue of
  139. Motorland (published by the Northern California Automobile Association).

  142.                  3. Plate Types and Costs

  145. Sequential Numbered Plates - $50
  146. --------------------------------
  147. You exchange your current plates for Yosemite plates which will have a series
  148. of numbers/letters in a sequence that is unique to the Yosemite plate program.
  149. The annual renewal fee will $40.

  151. Conversion of existing Personalized Plates - $65
  152. ------------------------------------------------
  153. If your plate is already personalized (a "vanity" plate), you can have that
  154. combination on a new Yosemite licence plate.  The annual renewal fee will be
  155. $65.

  157. Personalized Yosemite Plates - $90
  158. ---------------------------------
  159. This option is not recommended through the Yosemite plate application process
  160. because (a) most common combinations are already in use and unavailable and
  161. (b) there will be a "lag time" during processing.  It is recommended that
  162. you apply for a personalized plate through your local DMV office so that
  163. you can consult books of combinations already in use.  Once you have acquired
  164. the plate, you can then convert it to a Yosemite plate with the application.

  168. You may use your Yosemite licence plates subject to (a) payment of $40 ($65 
  169. for personalized) for each renewal of registration; (b) payment of an 
  170. additional $15 fee each time the plates are transferred to another vehicle,
  171. regardless of whether they are Personalized or Sequential plates.

  173. If the Personalized Yosemite licence plates are to be used on a leased vehicle,
  174. company vehicle, or are intended as a gift, a Statement of Facts may be 
  175. required at the time the plates are issued.
