  17. Mr. Berry is mistaken in his belief that the whole world cannot sustain
  18. itself at a U.S. living standard including personal transportation.

  20. He is also mistaken in his belief that the high U.S., European and
  21. Japanese living standards depend on exploiting the resources of
  22. the poor underdeveloped countries.

  24. We are exploiting cheap foreign labor, and if we couldn't do so,
  25. there would be a small reduction in living standards.  However,
  26. 1.2 billion Chinese have just recently made themselves available
  27. for exploitation, this being better than their other alternatives.

  29. Moreover, there is progress.  30 years ago, we exploited South
  30. Koreans who worked for $50 a month.  Just recently, the South
  31. Koreans started to exploit the Vietnamese who now get $50 per
  32. month, whereas South Koreans get $1500.  (The South Korean
  33. company Daewoo is putting up a factory in Hanoi to manufacture
  34. television picture tubes.)

  36. As I have done in the past, I am willing to take any two resources
  37. Mr. Berry can mention and show how they are available or substitutable
  38. on a sufficient scale for the world to reach U.S. standards.

  40. The problem is that probably that Mr. Berry has been misinformed by
  41. his teachers and other environmentalist, anti-civilization
  42. propagandists.
