  10. I may be somewhat of a fanatic on this subject but here goes:

  12. Months ago, when I bought my Worldblazer on the LoyaltyPays thing, I
  13. was told that I had to pay a 5% Massachusetts sales tax of 5%. Sales
  14. tax for mail order? Never heard of such nonsense. Seems that MA has a
  15. law that sez that if you have a sales office in the state then you
  16. gotta collect sales tax. I was pissed (even though I bought the modem
  17. from them) but just wanted to make sure that my sales tax was in fact
  18. making it to the MA Revenue Dept Slaes Tax Division. I called up,
  19. talked to a clerk who told me that the law does in fact exist,
  20. Telebit does pay the tax to the state, and there is absolutely no way
  21. to enforce this law if the foreighn corporations do not cooperate. I
  22. kinda left it that way with a mental note about Telebits
  23. spinelessness in this matter.

  25. Well... I just called Telebit again to order my fax upgrade for $100.
  26. I was again told that the sales tax is 5%. Since the very pleasent
  27. woman at the other end was not the criminal in charge, I was nice
  28. about explaining why this whole affair disgusted me. This is where it
  29. gets tres interesting. She told me that if I wanted to, she could
  30. check a box on the order form saying that the customer refused to pay
  31. the sales tax and that in the event of the Massachusetts Revenue
  32. Dept. auditing Telebit my name would be given to the Revenuers.

  34. Hmmm. Sounds like a good deal to me. Somewhere enshrined in Telebit
  35. is my order with the little box checked. The reason I'm writing is
  36. twofold:

  38.     1) I was not convinced that the information I got about
  39.        getting my box checked is being freely made available to
  40.        Telebit customers. It certainly should be. You should not
  41.        have to bitch before being informed about what all the
  42.        options are.
  43.  
  44.     2) Do I have a shot of getting my $25 bucks back for the tax
  45.        on the WorldBlazer? Why was I not told about this at the
  46.        time of purchase? I can only assure you that I was more
  47.        vociferous about it at WorldBlazer time than at Fax
  48.        upgrade time. $25 to me is an easy dinner.
