- I may be somewhat of a fanatic on this subject but here goes:
-
- Months ago, when I bought my Worldblazer on the LoyaltyPays thing, I
- was told that I had to pay a 5% Massachusetts sales tax of 5%. Sales
- tax for mail order? Never heard of such nonsense. Seems that MA has a
- law that sez that if you have a sales office in the state then you
- gotta collect sales tax. I was pissed (even though I bought the modem
- from them) but just wanted to make sure that my sales tax was in fact
- making it to the MA Revenue Dept Slaes Tax Division. I called up,
- talked to a clerk who told me that the law does in fact exist,
- Telebit does pay the tax to the state, and there is absolutely no way
- to enforce this law if the foreighn corporations do not cooperate. I
- kinda left it that way with a mental note about Telebits
- spinelessness in this matter.
-
- Well... I just called Telebit again to order my fax upgrade for $100.
- I was again told that the sales tax is 5%. Since the very pleasent
- woman at the other end was not the criminal in charge, I was nice
- about explaining why this whole affair disgusted me. This is where it
- gets tres interesting. She told me that if I wanted to, she could
- check a box on the order form saying that the customer refused to pay
- the sales tax and that in the event of the Massachusetts Revenue
- Dept. auditing Telebit my name would be given to the Revenuers.
-
- Hmmm. Sounds like a good deal to me. Somewhere enshrined in Telebit
- is my order with the little box checked. The reason I'm writing is
- twofold:
-
- 1) I was not convinced that the information I got about
- getting my box checked is being freely made available to
- Telebit customers. It certainly should be. You should not
- have to bitch before being informed about what all the
- options are.
-
- 2) Do I have a shot of getting my $25 bucks back for the tax
- on the WorldBlazer? Why was I not told about this at the
- time of purchase? I can only assure you that I was more
- vociferous about it at WorldBlazer time than at Fax
- upgrade time. $25 to me is an easy dinner.
-
- Telebit can reach me at 617-327-3083 anytime.
