- DMConnection provides UUCP connections, domain registration,
- Usenet NEWS feeds (partial or full), FREE connections for K-12
- schools located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, discounted
- connections for DEC partners and BCS members as well, and other
- services to customers requiring UUCP or interactive access to the
- internet via UUCP in the New England area.
-
- We automatically archive the following news groups:
-
- alt.sources
- biz.sco.sources
- comp.binaries.mac
- comp.sources.misc
- comp.sources.reviewed
- comp.sources.unix
- comp.sources.x
- vmsnet.sources
-
- and have made these archives available via mail based archive
- servers. We will archive other news groups as requested by our
- customers.
-
- We also provide a number of speciality news groups, principally
- gateways to various mailing lists of one form or another.
- For example, we gateway:
-
- Desperado - a periodic news letter of great amusement.
- EJournal - a erudite journal on electronic
- communications.
- Gopher - discussions of the Gopher software.
- MacApp3Tech$ - Technical support for the MacApp framework.
- MIME - a multimedia mail reader.
- Think-C - problems and solutions programming the Mac in
- Think-C.
-
- And provide them as newsgroups. We will add gateways to mailing
- lists as our customers request. A full list of the DMConnection
- gateways can be retrieved by sending a message containing:
-
- SEND DMC-HIERARCHIES
- QUIT
-
- to fileserv@dmc.com.
-
- In addition, for Digital Equipment Corporation ISV/CSO/etc. 3rd
- party partners, we provide access to the contents of the ISVNET
- notes files as news groups. In order to receive a feed of these
- news groups you must request the feed by sending a message to
- postmaster@dmc.com from ISVNET.
-
- We also make contents of the latest DECUS Languages & Tools CDROM
- available at all times for UUCP file transfer.
-
- DMConnection will add gateways, archive servers, news groups, and
- other services as requested by our customers. We are evaluating
- the cost/benefits of a direct connection to the Internet. Stay
- tuned for further information.
-
- We currently have over 3Gb of on-line storage and 55Gb of near line
- storage in a Kodak 560 Optical Disk Library fully integrated with
- VMS by software provided by Acorn Software and Doyle, Munroe
- Consultants, Inc.
-
- Our modems are Telebit WorldBlazer modems which support V.32,
- V.32bis, V.42, V.42bis, and PEP for the fastest and most reliable
- possible asynchronous data communnications. The machines
- supporting this activity are all Digital Equipment Corporation
- VAX computers running VMS. The UUCP and NEWS distribution
- implementations are provided by DECUS.
-
- DMConnection provides a number of distinct types of accounts
- depending upon your communications requirements.
-
- 1. Low Volume UUCP
-
- a. $5.00 per month
- b. Includes 1 free hour of communication.
- c. $4.00 per hour beyond the first hour.
-
- 2. Moderate Volume UUCP
-
- a. $10.00 per month
- b. Includes 3 free hours of communication.
- c. $3.00 per hour beyond the third hour.
-

- moderate or moderate to high). A $5.00 fee is charged for
- degrading service (moving from high to moderate or moderate to
- low).
-
- We also offer interactive accounts for customers who do not wish
- to bring up UUCP. The cost is $10.00 per month and $5.00 per
- hour for any and all interactive time.
-
- There is a one time $20.00 registration fee which covers updating
- the UUCP maps, setting up the account for your host, etc.
- Payment for services is required in full upon receipt of invoice.
- Checks or money orders only. Clients who prepay their accounts
- receive a 10% discount on their account balance. Members of one
- or more of the following organizations receive a 25% increment to
- their free communications time:
-
- Boston Computer Society
- DEC ISV/CSO/or other 3rd party organization.
-
- Massachusetts schools in the K-12 grades will be provided a uucp
- connection free of charge. There are some restrictions and conditions
- on K-12 accounts that are not part of the usual DMConnection terms and
- conditions:
-
- 1. The school must have a computer that can run UUCP/NEWS (NEWS
- is ESPECIALLY important) and, preferably, a FAST modem
- (V.32/V.32bis + V.42/V.42bis or PEP). The fast modem is crucial
- if they are going to do any significant amount of news
- collecting, e.g., the K12 groups.
-
- 2. The teacher/administrator in charge of the project must send a
- letter to DMConnection on school letterhead (this is the authorization
- part) requesting a connection. They must also fill out the DMConnection
- subscription form and include it with the letter.
-
- 3. Any abuse of the connection, i.e., forged messages, attempts at
- cracking DMConnection or other systems using DMConnection services,
- etc. that are tracked to a school will result in loss of service and,
- if possible, prosecution of the appropriate individuals.
-
- 4. Schools may not resell this service in any way. This includes,
- but is not limited to:
-
- a. establishing a BBS using the link to DMConnection
- for their NEWS and/or MAIL feed.
- b. establishing a UUCP network outside the school system proper,
- e.g., to individual homes.
-
- Any school that does resell this service WITHOUT express permission
- from DMConnection will loose their service AND be liable for the costs
- of the service from the time they began to resell the service.
-
- 5. The only administrative identities recognized at the school will
- be the postmaster and the postmaster's real identity.
-
- 6. DMConnection will not push data to schools.
-
- Other that this, schools are full clients with full privileges to
- DMConnection services.
-
- Invoices are sent by electronic mail on the first of every month.
- Special arrangements need to be made if this form of billing is
- not acceptable.
-
- Once your account is set up you will receive the necessary login
- information by physical mail. The registration form and terms
- and conditions follow. To subscribe to DMConnection, please
- fill out the registration form and return it by surface mail to
- the address on the form.
-
- For those of you who are interested, the following exchanges are local
- to DMConnection:
-
- Berlin 838
- Bolton 779
- Hudson 562, 568
- Marlboro 460, 467, 480, 481, 485, 490, 624
- Maynard 461, 493, 496, 897
- Sudbury 443
-
- DMConnection offers PUSHing data to customer sites instead of
- requiring customers to PULL data from DMConnection. For local
- phone numbers, this service is offered free of charge. For
- numbers within the 508/617 area code, this service is provided
- at a $12.00 per hour surcharge on top of any connection time.
- For all other numbers, this service is provided at a $16.00 per
- hour surcharge on top of any connection time.
-
- Unfortunately, DMConnection is not connected directly to the
- Internet. Therefore we cannot act as an authoritative name server
- in the Internet sense. Clients wishing to establish their own
- domains will be provided with the necessary forms for
- establishing them through UUNET. UUNET charges $50 for this
- service. DMConnection acts as the official bridge between UUNET
- and DMConnection client domains.
-
- DMConnection offers UUCP file transfer access to our MX mail
- server archives. We continue to offer and support our MX mail
- servers. For full details on the current offerings of the
- DMConnection mail servers, send a message to:
-
- fileserv@dmc.com
-
- with the body of the message containing:
-
- HELP
- SEND INDEX
-
- This file server will also provide you with details on the newsgroups and
- mailing lists available to you via DMConnection.
