- in those days....forties and early fifties....i was living in phoenix
- arizona....where it is hotter, but somewhat dryer, than MS....
- all summer (meaning when school was out) we had to 'take a rest' from
- 1-3 pm, 7 days a week....so did all other kids in neighborhood....
- polio was a part of it, but so was heat exhaustion....or heat prostration..
- (i always get those two confused....imagine neal will straighten me out...)
- it also gave the mothers a couple hours of peace....
- we were FORBIDDEN to sleep o-) of course sometimes we did.... o-)
- a couple days a week we were allowed to have someone rest with us....which
- meant a neighbor friend....and we had to be totally quiet and sitting or
- reclining....usually playing monopoly (marathon games, with the game slid
- under the bed til the next day....or a jigsaw puzzle.....

- we had one....usually called a swamp cooler....actually, an evaporative
- cooler....which wouldn't work well in MS at all...but ok in parts of TX
- and NM and AZ, etc.....ours was on top of the house....
- one of the treats on a hot day was to be able to get ona stepladder...
- and climb to the top in the doorway and have the cool air blow directly
- on you....since the ductwork was in the hall ceiling....only gtot to do that
- a couple times a summer.....
