- One important area of concern I have is the effects of
- electronic media on literacy. In particular I am concerned
- about the appetite for im mediacy of response and how it
- is altering perception/understanding/ articulation of
- ideas. There is a communications' law (I believe Hertz')
- which states that immediacy of response equals depth of
- involvement. I am primarily focussed on anticipation of
- future developments in this area, rather than analysis of
- past effects. One such development would be the effects
- that vocal/auditory interactions with computers would have
- on literacy. One hypothetical scenario would be that Star
- Trek-like interactions with computers would obviate the
- need for a person to know how to produce (at any stage or
- in any aspect) a formal document. The person would simply
- brain storm with the computer, and the computer would do
- the rest. Gandalf, in fact, had such a device, The Voice
- Station, which died an early death about five years
- ago.
-
- I'm interested in any thoughts/relevant
- information/hypotheses that any one may have, or know of.
- Given the nature of future-scanning, even inanities and
- jokes may provide intuitive clues, so the door is wide
- open.
-
- (BTW, Words-L is an interesting example of the immediacy/
- involvement principle in action.)
