  16. One important area of concern I have is the effects of
  17. electronic media on literacy. In particular I am concerned
  18. about the appetite for im mediacy of response and how it
  19. is altering perception/understanding/ articulation of
  20. ideas. There is a communications' law (I believe Hertz')
  21. which states that immediacy of response equals depth of
  22. involvement. I am primarily focussed on anticipation of
  23. future developments in this area, rather than analysis of
  24. past effects. One such development would be the effects
  25. that vocal/auditory interactions with computers would have
  26. on literacy. One hypothetical scenario would be that Star
  27. Trek-like interactions with computers would obviate the
  28. need for a person to know how to produce (at any stage or
  29. in any aspect) a formal document. The person would simply
  30. brain storm with the computer, and the computer would do
  31. the rest. Gandalf, in fact, had such a device, The Voice
  32. Station, which died an early death about five years
  33. ago.

  35.         I'm interested in any thoughts/relevant
  36. information/hypotheses that any one may have, or know of.
  37. Given the nature of future-scanning, even inanities and
  38. jokes may provide intuitive clues, so the door is wide
  39. open.

  42. involvement principle in action.)
