- I have one of those guys, too, which is one reason I am following Dan's
- recovery with such interest. Two weeks ago the doctor asked me if I
- wanted to take part in a "blind" study of patients with macular holes (I
- told him I didn't consider this term pc in the circumstances). Since I
- have what is called a full macular hole in my right eye, caused by a cyst
- four years ago, and since a similar cyst has been lurking on the left eye
- for the last two years, he thought I would be a good candidate for the
- study. I am supposed to let him know after the holidays if I want to take
- part...I think the answer is going to be yes. Those who agree to
- participate will draw to see whether they are in the group which has
- surgery within the next year or the group which is merely observed on a
- regular basis for the same time period. Current success rate on the
- surgery, which sounds similar to Dan's seond go-round, is quoted as 70
- percent. In my case, the surgery would be considered successful if it
- restored reading vision in the right eye to "halfway down the eye chart."
- (Currently the eye chart, viewed with that eye, looks sorta like a
- crunched-up butterfly. The big E floats in and out sometimes, a little
- the way answers used to float to the top of the fluid in my Magic 8-Ball.)
-
- Anyway, I agree with Dan...this *is* scary stuff.
