- It undoubtedly refers to the nine yard sari. Around the turn of the
- century the cumbersome nine yard sari was going out of fashion all
- over the Indian empire, and women chose to wear it only on formal
- occasions. Thus, "the whole nine yards" came to mean doing some-
- thing "properly". The British Raj veterans brought this phrase back
- to Britain.
