- > What delicacy do we find if we open a box of milky ways?
-
- Milky Ways are wonderful candy bars. The idea of a whole box of them
- makes me feel giddy; it's been a long time since I had even one. I think
- they're chocolate with caramel and nuts...marshmallow, too? As I said,
- it's been a long time.

-
- I'm having some difficulty figuring out why you would encounter the Texas
- Panhandle going from Louisiana to New Mexico, but the Panhandle is that
- part of northern Texas that sticks up like a smokestack.

- > Vick's VapoRub: what revolting product is this?
-
- You're right...it is indeed revolting. It is a lot like mentholatum. The
- consumer information on my jar (yes, I keep it in the house) says that it
- is "an external vaporizing colds medicine that provides temporary relief
- from nasal congestion and coughing due to colds. Inhalation of the
- VapoRub medicated vapors relieves these cold symptoms for hours, so you
- can rest better." My mother was (and still is) a firm believer in its
- miraculous qualities, and as a child I frequently had to inhale the stuff
- when I had a cold. What was even worse, though, was the other use of it,
- which seems to have been a pretty standard treatment for colds when I was
- growing up. If you had a cold, you would be sent to bed in your warm
- little outing flannel pajamas. Then your mother would rub Vicks on your
- chest, button up the pajamas, and stick a hot water bottle on top...yuck!

- > > Lum 'n' Abner land: what is
- the reference?
-
- Lum 'n' Abner were characters on a popular radio show (well, popular with
- some people, my family included) of the 1930s and 1940s. They had a
- general store somewhere in Arkansas, so I would imagine the phrase refers
- to Arkansas.
-
- I deleted the BB reference by mistake...but BBs are small steel pellets
- designed for a spring-propelled gun used mainly by children. A BB is
- roughly the size of the capital O in 12-point Courier type.
- ndh (whose mother's arsenal of medical remedies also included
- Camphophenique and Mexsana Heat Powder)
