- Close enough. It would suggest that the person had something to do with
- the Redemptorist Order, or one of its lay (secular -- non-clergy)
- affiliates. It probably evolved from things like hair-shirts and self-
- flagellation (hence the chain), as one of the many somewhat bizarre
- forms of private piety that grew up in the Church since the
- Reformation/Council of Trent. Such piety ceased to be a part of the
- main stream of the Church since Vatican II, but it is still strong
- in some areas. I believe the scapular as such involved a set of
- straps (or chains, acmb) which were draped over each shoulder and
- tied with a horizontal cross strap across the body, just below the
- chest. At the points where the horizontal strap met the vertical
- staps, small religious icons were attached. Eventually the prac-
- tise changed to just wearing a small medallion with the picture
- of the Blessed Virgin on it, strapped around the neck with a small
- chain as used for any neck ornament. The last I was really in the know
- about this kind of thing was over 30 years ago, so my memory may be some-
- what inaccurate.
