  37. Well, you have of course read Reischaeur's _The Japanese Today_
  38. (ISBN 4-8053-0512-6), haven't you?  While I suspect you find it
  39. banal, I still think it can be a good introductory book.  Or you could
  40. even try Crichton's _Rising Sun_ (ISBN 0-394-58942-4).  Some called
  41. the book racist, but I thought it was OK.  I rather enjoyed it.  I can
  42. also recommend _Japan Almanac_ (ISBN 4-02-219593-2) as a reference book
  43. for students.  It's a small book but a well-edited, bilingual one.  If
  44. I can think of some other books over the vacation, I'll let you know.

  57. The first report I saw was as follows (The Daily Yomiuri, 12 Dec 92):

  59. SYDNEY (AP) -- A Japanese woman, who disappeared during her honeymoon,
  60. publicly apologized on Friday for staging the incident.
  61.      Police found 25-year-old Emiko Ogura earlier Friday in a motel in
  62. Sydney's eastern suburbs, four days after she was reported missing.
  63.      At a news conference, Ogura, who speaks no English, said through
  64. an interpreter that she was sorry for the trouble she had caused both
  65. in Australia and Japan.
  66.      She said she had suffered doubts about her two-week-old marriage
  67. to Yoshiro Fujieda, who sat beside her at the news conference.
  68.      She said she had needed time to think alone but now wanted to return
  69. to Japan with her husband if he would have her back.
  70.      Ogura disappeared Monday while shopping in Sydney's Rocks tourist
  71. precinct.  In a brief phone call later that night she told her husband
  72. she had met a "friendly Australian."  This prompted fears that she had
  73. been abducted.
  74.      She telephoned him again on Thursday falsely saying she was at the
  75. resort city of the Gold Coast, 500 kilometers to the north, and would
  76. soon return to Sydney.
  77.      However, police said they found Ogura unharmed and staying at the
  78. Sydney motel early Friday morning.
  79.      Police said no charges will be filed against her.  Superintendent
  80. Andy Holland said she had been hiding at the motel all along.

  105. It's actually 'Saitama' University, as Karen correctly suggested.
  106. It's located in Urawa, Saitama Prefecture, 20 km north of Tokyo.
  107. It's a national university, founded in 1949.  Enrollment - 6,500.
  108. Sorry, but I don't know anything about Horikawa and Iizuka.

  111. for the year 1992.  I have really appreciated the instructive and
  112. entertaining answers to my innocent queries.  I'm really hoping that
  113. all the <gems> I have collected will be compiled into a dictionary of some
  114. sort in the future.  But then, how am I supposed to distribute royalty? :-)
