- [ 1 ] Foreigners in Japan/Books on Japanese Culture.
-
- Karen wrote (14 Dec 92):
-
- kk) I should say that while I was appalled at what it's like to be a
- kk) foreigner in Japan, I think it's probably better than being a lot of
- kk) things in this country. I was horrified when I was on a bus in Okla-
- kk) homa and anyone who looked vaguely hispanic was required to produce id.
- ======================================================================
- Karen,
-
- What were some of the things you found appalling when you were staying
- in Japan? You don't have to be polite here, Karen.
- --------------------------------------------------
-
- kk) Hey, Akio, I'm teaching Japanese culture next semester...have you read
- kk) anything that you would recommend? Dave Barry's book is too full of
- kk) misinformation to be a main text, but I'm going to put it on reserve.
- kk) (I like his understanding of tatemae and honne.) I think I am going
- kk) to use Ruth Benedicts Chrysanthemum and the sword as the main text,
- kk) but I'm still looking for something more modern. I think I am going
- kk) to make Karsten take me to Kinokuniya when I am in L.A. over break.

- Well, you have of course read Reischaeur's _The Japanese Today_
- (ISBN 4-8053-0512-6), haven't you? While I suspect you find it
- banal, I still think it can be a good introductory book. Or you could
- even try Crichton's _Rising Sun_ (ISBN 0-394-58942-4). Some called
- the book racist, but I thought it was OK. I rather enjoyed it. I can
- also recommend _Japan Almanac_ (ISBN 4-02-219593-2) as a reference book
- for students. It's a small book but a well-edited, bilingual one. If
- I can think of some other books over the vacation, I'll let you know.

- [ 2 ] Japanese bride on AWOL in Sydney.
-
- Carolyn wrote (15 Dec 92):
-
- cb) BTW Akio, have you heard anything about the Japanese bride who went AWOL on
- cb) her honeymoon in Sydney? Is there any news of her since she arrived back in
- cb) Japan?

- cb) Carolyn
- ===========
- The first report I saw was as follows (The Daily Yomiuri, 12 Dec 92):
-
- SYDNEY (AP) -- A Japanese woman, who disappeared during her honeymoon,
- publicly apologized on Friday for staging the incident.
- Police found 25-year-old Emiko Ogura earlier Friday in a motel in
- Sydney's eastern suburbs, four days after she was reported missing.
- At a news conference, Ogura, who speaks no English, said through
- an interpreter that she was sorry for the trouble she had caused both
- in Australia and Japan.
- She said she had suffered doubts about her two-week-old marriage
- to Yoshiro Fujieda, who sat beside her at the news conference.
- She said she had needed time to think alone but now wanted to return
- to Japan with her husband if he would have her back.
- Ogura disappeared Monday while shopping in Sydney's Rocks tourist
- precinct. In a brief phone call later that night she told her husband
- she had met a "friendly Australian." This prompted fears that she had
- been abducted.
- She telephoned him again on Thursday falsely saying she was at the
- resort city of the Gold Coast, 500 kilometers to the north, and would
- soon return to Sydney.
- However, police said they found Ogura unharmed and staying at the
- Sydney motel early Friday morning.
- Police said no charges will be filed against her. Superintendent
- Andy Holland said she had been hiding at the motel all along.
- ============================================================
-
- Well, from what I heard, the whole thing seemed to have been pre-arranged.
- The motel where she was hiding had been booked in advance by another man
- she used to work under.
-
- Ogura and Fujieda are now divorced, naturally...

- [ 3 ] Saitami University.
-
- Marty wrote (15 Dec 92)
-
- mr) Greetings,
-
- mr) All the dignitaries of higher rank being either sick or otherwise indisposed
- mr) it falls to me to entertain President Horikawa from Saitami University this
- mr) afternoon. Does anyone know anything about this person, the institution,
- mr) or Mr. Iizuka, who will be accompanying?
-
- mr) It seems they're signing an exchange agreement with us.
-
- mr) Marty

-
- It's actually 'Saitama' University, as Karen correctly suggested.
- It's located in Urawa, Saitama Prefecture, 20 km north of Tokyo.
- It's a national university, founded in 1949. Enrollment - 6,500.
- Sorry, but I don't know anything about Horikawa and Iizuka.
-
- [ 4 ] Gleanings (73). Thank you very much. This is the last Gleanings
- for the year 1992. I have really appreciated the instructive and
- entertaining answers to my innocent queries. I'm really hoping that
- all the <gems> I have collected will be compiled into a dictionary of some
- sort in the future. But then, how am I supposed to distribute royalty? :-)
- The first Gleanings for 1993 will be posted on January 11.
