  19. The MSD program (Microsoft Diagnostics) that comes with Windows 3.1
  20. will tell you what kind of UART you have.

  22. BTW, my machine is a 20 MHz 386sx with an 8250 UART (8520? Can't
  23. remember the damn number exactly offhand), and I can do xfers at
  24. speeds up to 57,600 with very few errors, 38,400 is virtually
  25. error-free.

  27. Check your Connection in setup, you may want to lower your default
  28. baud rate.  Mine's set at 38,400 and no problems to speak of.
  29. Hardware flow control is a must, too, at high speed.  And use the
  30. 16K buffer for sure.  I also increased buffering in Windows itself
  31. with the statement: ComXBuffer=<buffsize> (bytes) in the
  32. [386Enhanced] section of WIN.INI, where the "X" is the number of
  33. your COM port.

  35. It may help also to increase your Windows in Foreground priority in
  36. the 386 Enhanced control panel, to give PW more cpu time.  And set
  37. your COM port to 19,200 with Hardware Flow Control in the Ports
  38. Control Panel.

  40. Last but not least, it helps to have sufficient memory!  I and a
  41. friend of mine have identical machines, and we both recently
  42. bought identical modems (Intel SatisFAXtion/400 external
  43. 14,400bps). He has only 2 megs on his machine, whereas I have 8.
  44. He probably shouldn't be running Windows at all with so little
  45. memory, but that's another story...

  47. Anyway, on his machine, the modem is useless for xfers above
  48. 9600.  Without Smartdrive his machine is just too damn slow to keep
  49. up.

  51. He ordered two 4 meg SIMM's a few days after he got the modem.  :-)
