- The MSD program (Microsoft Diagnostics) that comes with Windows 3.1
- will tell you what kind of UART you have.
-
- BTW, my machine is a 20 MHz 386sx with an 8250 UART (8520? Can't
- remember the damn number exactly offhand), and I can do xfers at
- speeds up to 57,600 with very few errors, 38,400 is virtually
- error-free.
-
- Check your Connection in setup, you may want to lower your default
- baud rate. Mine's set at 38,400 and no problems to speak of.
- Hardware flow control is a must, too, at high speed. And use the
- 16K buffer for sure. I also increased buffering in Windows itself
- with the statement: ComXBuffer=<buffsize> (bytes) in the
- [386Enhanced] section of WIN.INI, where the "X" is the number of
- your COM port.
-
- It may help also to increase your Windows in Foreground priority in
- the 386 Enhanced control panel, to give PW more cpu time. And set
- your COM port to 19,200 with Hardware Flow Control in the Ports
- Control Panel.
-
- Last but not least, it helps to have sufficient memory! I and a
- friend of mine have identical machines, and we both recently
- bought identical modems (Intel SatisFAXtion/400 external
- 14,400bps). He has only 2 megs on his machine, whereas I have 8.
- He probably shouldn't be running Windows at all with so little
- memory, but that's another story...
-
- Anyway, on his machine, the modem is useless for xfers above
- 9600. Without Smartdrive his machine is just too damn slow to keep
- up.
-
- He ordered two 4 meg SIMM's a few days after he got the modem. :-)
