- First of all, to everyone, a belated Merry Christmas, and a Happy New
- Year! Sorry I left so soon, but fortunately exams here in Huntsville ended
- early.
-
- As some of you may already know or remember, I spent 5 days in
- Washington D.C. in December (16-20). I am glad to say that I have a couple
- of successes to report on the SEDS front.
-
- First of all, I met with the Young Astronaut Council at their national
- Headquarters on Thursday Dec. 17. We had a very pleasant 45 minute
- meeting, during which SEDS was offered a workshop at their annual conference.
- This conference will be held in Houston this year, from June 10-13, at the
- Sheraton Astrodome. This will get 2 SEDS people in free as moderators (regular
- $175), in addition to any presenters. The topic also has to be
- generally related to education in space. In our discussions, I
- suggested that we might have something along the lines of SEDS being the
- natural follow on organization after Young Astronauts. (they
- conveniently end their program at the ninth grade....).
- We have to let them know what the topic of our workshop would be by the
- end of January.
-
- The "fee" for this would be that SEDS members have to help out with
- registration for the conference. The conference is geared towards
- educators, and this would be in my opinion an exccellent opportunity to
- start new high school SEDS chapters.
-
- Therefore to the SEDS-USA Board I propose the following...
- 1) Alvin...would USS be interested in doing something along these
- lines?
- 2) Amy...would you be interested in helping out with the workshop?
-
- To both of you...please get in touch with me ASAP!
- Incidently : I have a list of last years workshops if you are
- interested, or need ideas. Also David Webb has apparently been very
- active with this group, so maybe he could help you out Amy if you need ideas.
-
- Secondly, I attempted to set up a meeting with Ms McGee of the NASA HQ
- educations office regarding SEDS, but owing to schedule conflicts on
- both our parts, this was not able to happen. I will be contacting her by mail
- during the next 7-10 days however. This will be an effort to increase SEDS
- exposure, and get us "project' opportunities.
-
- Thirdly, I had a luncheon with Bob Richards and Peter Diamandis on
- Sunday the 20th, and reviewed with them the SEDS Business Plan,
- hereafter renamed the SEDS Strategic Plan. I presented them with a
- general overview of my proposals, and general acceptance was obtained
- (I left them with a printed copy to examine in more detail). The most
- important thing that came out of it in my view was that
- we need greater involvement with our advisors, and we should be using
- them more to bolster our legitimacy and soundness. Some of this will be
- reflected in some changes to the strategic plan which will be forthcoming.
-
- Finally, regarding the strategic plan, baring disasters, I will be
- printing it out this coming weekend and mailing it to all Board Members
- next Monday, January 11, 1993.
-
- Ad Astra Per Ardua, and meetings
-
- Respectfully submitted,
-
