  24.         The following is from an experimental gopher that has
  25. been posted at TECHNET in Singapore.  It is largely
  26.  self-explanatory.  There are a number of entries on the
  27. NCB gopher, but among the most interestesting are the
  28. IT-2000 Vision statement and the listing of those responsible
  29. for making it a reality.  This outlines the goal for
  30. Singapore's information future.  Other entries include
  31. Veronica (a gopher searching tool) and a strange list
  32. of libraries.  For those of you who are given to or
  33. tempted by gopher-ing, this is worth a look.

  52. About This Gopher Site
  53. ----------------------
  54. You have reached the gopher site maintained by the National Computer
  55. Board of Singapore.  Having only set up this gopher site since early
  56. Dec 1992, we are obviously very young and are still working hard to put
  57. in more volumes of information for public access.  At the moment of this
  58. writing, this site is still "unpublished" in the sense that it is not
  59. being made known to Internet users and is not registered with the mother
  60. gopher at U of Minnesota.  By late March 1993, I expect the information
  61. on this site to be sufficiently good for public visits, and will then
  62. register it with Internet users through registration and announcements.

  65. Briefly, What Is National Computer Board (NCB)?
  66. -----------------------------------------------
  67. The National Computer Board of Singapore was set up in 1981 to promote
  68. use of computers in government sectors.  After 10 years of focused work,
  69. the NCB has successfully pushed the use of Information Technology (IT)
  70. into most government ministries and offices.  There are also joint
  71. efforts
  72. with external organisations, such as AT&T, to promote the upgrading of
  73. IT knowledge in the local environment.

  75. While this effort will be relentlessly continued, NCB has initiated a
  76. new direction for its next decade ahead.  This initiative is being
  77. entitled the "IT2000 Masterplan".  The study of the plan was extensively
  78. carried out, and prompted attention on many aspects of its design and
  79. implementation.  Being a nation-wide plan that seeks to bring IT to the
  80. public, the project has been endorsed by our Prime Minister for full
  81. implementation.  We are certainly excited about the entire plan, and
  82. look forward to a borderless collaboration with all interested parties
  83. to make this a success.  More details on this plan may be found in the
  84. directory under "Singapore's IT2000 Nation-wide Plan".

  99. A Final Word

  101. There will be more items pertaining to the NCB Corporate, as well as to
  102.  the IT2000 plan, being stuffed into the directories soon (say, by March
  103. 1993).
  104. I'm also open to putting other "fun" things, like the "Humor and Jokes"
  105. directory.  Like most gopher sites, I'm making it an evolving archive
  106. that is being kept as up-to-minute as possible (since this is exactly
  107. why electronic communication is so attractive).  Do visit us time and
  108. again, as we'll be pleased to offer more.  Finally, hope you find your
  109.  stay here an enjoyable one!
