  17.    SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea will normalize relations next week
  18. with Vietnam, ending an animosity that developed during the Vietnam War,
  19. Foreign Ministry officials said today.
  20.    Ministry spokesman Yoo Myung-hwan said normalization would be announced
  21. during Foreign Minister Lee Sang-ock's three-day visit to Vietnam, starting
  22. Dec.  21.
  23.    The new ties will cap a year-long South Korean bid to expand economic
  24. relations with Vietnam.
  25.    Vietnam has tried to entice South Korean firms into its development
  26. projects.  South Korea wants to use Vietnam's resources and labor as a new
  27. base for its overseas investment.
  28.    Despite the lack of relations, trade between Vietnam and South Korea has
  29. increased steadily, with South Korean investments in Vietnam estimated at $6.2
  30. million as of December this year.
  31.    From 1964 through 1973, about 310,000 South Korean troops were dispatched to
  32. Vietnam to fight alongside U.S. soldiers.
