  23. The above directive and the list of "frivolous" research projects you 
  24. provided do suggest a bias against behavioural research, especially of the 
  25. social science variety.  I suspect that this is due largely to the general 
  26. public's ignorance of psychology as a discipline.  Psychology may not 
  27. offer the immediate, tangible benefits to society of engineering or 
  28. medical science, but I believe it can make valuable contributions in many 
  29. areas (employee selection, education, legal procedures, treatment of 
  30. behaviour disorders, etc etc etc); and, of course, pure research should 
  31. also be valued as an essential endeavour.  Unfortunately, when most people 
  32. think of psychology, they think of Freud or Dr. Joyce Brothers (I know 
  33. some otherwise well-rounded people who are surprised at the breadth of 
  34. pschological study).
  35. APA (and APS) have failed to educate the public about psychology (yes, APA 
  36. took over Psychology Today ... ha) and we continue to pay for public 
  37. ignorance.
